Cervical cancer is the number one cause of death amongst women between the ages of 14 and 44.

While a common Pap smear can detect cervical abnormalities, the results are often inconclusive. Moreover, because followup appointments are extremely expensive, many women often choose not to undergo cervical cancer detection procedures altogether for fear of being unable to afford further treatment if an abnormality is detected.

Visual inspection by acetic acid (VIA), however, can be used to detect precancerous cells within the cervix. The cells can then be treated by cryotherapy in the same appointment. Due to its low cost, convenience and effectiveness, many women in the Dominican Republic can directly benefit from such a procedure.

We are aiming to raise $15,000 for clinician training and supply purchases. That sum will provide 1,000 women with access to VIA/cryotherapy cervical cancer treatment.
